REVIEWS:

All About Jazz (Victor L. Schermer)
No Bounds is as tasteful a big band album as youíre likely to hear today, at a time when large jazz ensembles compete in virtuousity, intensity, range andóunfortunatelyóvolume. Every note on the disc is well-placed, in tune and, even when dissonant, pleasing to the ears. Thatís because Walden knows music from top to bottom, having been a trumpeter...
Audiophile Audition (Jeff Krow)
Chris Walden's debut album, 2005's Home of My Heart (previously reviewed) was a hard act to follow. His latest CD does not match the full power and force of his debut, but it is still a fine contemporary big band issue. In these days when true big band recordings with new material are so rare, Walden delivers the goods again by mixing a jazz versio...
All About Jazz (Jim Santella)
For his sophomore release, trumpeter Chris Walden has written big band arrangements for several old chestnuts, several fresh originals and a few rare gems. His program sparkles with an accessible ambience. The combination of several vocal selections, a balance of orchestral instruments and big band sounds, and stellar soloing from this lineup of Lo...
All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
Chris Walden has been on a heck of a roll lately, with two Grammy nods for last year's Home of My Heart, one of the finest big band efforts of the year. He also in did the orchestrations for the acclaimed Michael Bolton set Bolton Swings Sinatra. Home of My Heart deserved all the accolades that came its way; No Bounds is an even stronger disc. ...
All Music Guide (Adam Greenburg)
The follow-up to a particularly successful debut album, No Bounds brings more of what could potentially be referred to as "contemporary" big band. Big band as a major force disappeared decades ago, and those playing now are almost entirely nostalgia-based groups playing the old standards. Chris Walden is one of a very few that has adapted the genre...
All About Jazz (Jack Bowers)
Any way you slice it, itís not easy for a big band to earn a Grammy Award nomination. Composer/arranger Chris Waldenís debut album, Home of My Heart, received not one but two, for Best Large Jazz Ensemble and Best Instrumental Arrangement. One year later, Walden returns with another strong contender, No Bounds, showcasing eleven of his exemplary ch...
ejazznews (John Gilbert)
This is a fine big band with the likes of Carl Saunders and Kim Richmond on it and any band with these strong players has a lot to say. "When You Wish Upon A Star" features Kim Richmond's muscular alto solo which makes this star shine in all its glory, no need to wish upon it. "People Will Say We're In Love".....Tierney Sutton's sibilance s...
Ventura County Reporter (Matthew Singer)
THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN: Composer Chris Walden never wanted to be a star, but with No Bounds he may have no choice When Chris Walden was growing up in Germany, his mother, a choir singer, would often rehearse at home. Thus, musicians were always around. And where there are musicians, there are instruments. That is where the future Grammy-nom...
San Diego Union-Tribune (Andrew Gilbert)
At the age of 29, Chris Walden came to Hollywood to write music for the movies, but he's gained almost as much attention with his talent-packed big band, winning fans like film composer John Williams and jazz pianist John Grusin. The German-born trumpeter and composer moved to California in the mid-1990s, looking to find work on big-budget ...
MusicWeb International (Tony Augarde)
Too many big band recordings sound the same, using hackneyed techniques and voicings. But this album sounds different right from the very start ñ an imaginative arrangement of David Fosterís Winter Games. The ensemble sound is a knockout, possibly because Chris Walden uses six trumpets and five trombones, creating a rich and rare depth to the music...
The Davis Enterprise, September 14, 2006 (Ric Bang)
Chris Walden was born and raised in Germany, where he recieved his musical education. He now lives and works in Los Angeles as a musician, composer and arranger. He has scored more than 30 feature and TV films, and arranged works for numerous artists and the Chicago Symphony. With that background, it's no surprise that the band utilized on this ...
Jazz Times, November 2006 (David Franklin)
Although he ended up losing to Dave Holland and Gordon Goodwin, respectively, the German-born composer-arranger Chris Walden was recently nominated for Grammy Awards for best large jazz ensemble album and best instrumental arrangement. No Bounds is the follow-up to Home of My Heart, the album that brought him such acclaim. A compositi...
Jazz Review (Brenton Plourde )
Hailing from Germany, Chris Walden has combined the two elements of European big band with classic American big band to release a great album. What really stands out here are the two tracks "People Will Say Weíre In Love" and "Smile." Both are sung by vocalist Tierney Sutton, the Milwaukee born, Los Angeles transplant who really brings those two...
Downbeat, December 2006 (Fred Bouchard)
Arms-wide embraces and straightforward voicings mark the squeaky-clean but silky-smooth style of trumpeter and film and TV composer Walden. A cast of 60-plus with international guests wail these tight-as-a-cricket charts and take brisk solos. Tierney Sutton sings Peggy Lee straight-arrow on "People Will Say We're In Love" as trombonist Bob McChesne...
ejazznews (Edward Blanco)
No Bounds is an enchanting and absolutely riveting big band release from German composer/arranger, Chris Walden, a two-time Grammy Award nominee for his previous album, Home of My Heart. This recording has a decidedly Disney musical theme as Walden includes three big band orchestrations of the Disney songs, ìWhen You Wish Upon A Star,î ìSome Day My...
Cadence, December 2006 (Jack Bowers)
No Bounds is composer/arranger Chris Walden's follow-up to last year's Grammy Award-nominated Home of My Heart[Origin 82439], and could be another strong contender for that honor, as it comprises eleven of his admirable charts performed by a blue-chip ensemble of Los Angeles-area studio/big band musicians. Walden, who employs a large string ...
