...Scott Burns has delivered a masterpiece of ingeniously crafted and superbly performed originals.
Judy Roberts, Chicago Jazz Magazine

One of Chicago's highly acclaimed young tenor saxophonists teams with the veteran trio of Ron Perrillo, Dennis Carroll, and George Fludas on a set of dynamic and memorable originals. Alternately swinging, moody or searching, Burns' rich compositions create the perfect vehicle to highlight the emotional range of this supple quartet. Scott Burns has performed with Harry Connick Jr., the Blue Wisp Big Band, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble under William Russo, and Bobby Broom among many others.

Reviews of Passages

Chicago Jazz Magazine (Judy Roberts)
With his Origin Records debut CD, Passages, saxophonist Scott Burns has delivered a masterpiece of ingeniously crafted and superbly performed originals. His appealing, intelligent compositions are the perfect showcase for his electrifying energy and sophisticated, sensuous sound. Joined by the Chicago dreamteam of pianist Ron Perrillo, bassist Denn ...

Jazzscene, Nov 06 (George Fendel)
A new name to me; one could indeed say that Scott Burns, in a jazz parlance, burns. His eight original tunes played here run the gamut from dreamy ballads to hard bop burners (there's that word again). With a rhythm section of Ron Perrillo, piano; Dennis Carroll, bass and George Fludas, drums, Burns, sounding a bit like Eric Alexander, hits the bul ...

All Music Guide (Scott Yanow)
Scott Burns has a large tone on tenor and a hard-driving style that is at times reminiscent of Lew Tabackin and Pete Christlieb. His set of originals include the swinging "Lead the Way," a brooding ballad in "Black Orchid," the optimistic "Downhill Stroll" and the minor blues "Storm Rising." The fine rhythm section features plenty of solo space for ...

www.jazzradio247.com (Rick Culver)
A schooled musician, graduating from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Scott Burns spent a good portion of his early career in the Cincinnati/Dayton, Ohio area, learning his craft. In 1998, he moved to Chicago, a natural and ideal location for some of the best jazz artists in the world, who can be found in Chicago dating b ...

Cadence, Nov-Oct 2007 (Phillip McNally)
Scott Burns comes out of Dexter mainly, playing late bop and swinging fiercely on Passages. He's got a nice deep tone and some fleet fingers, but he is always melodic and telling a story, not just honking over some Blues riffs. The trio is very nice behind him, and in particular Ron Perrillo is accomplished, with a bit of Silver in his veins, but h ...

All About Jazz (Alex Marianyi)
Chicago-based tenor saxophonist Scott Burns has said that he practices each exercise, pattern, or whatever else he may be working on until he gets it perfect. Five times in a row. The results of this type of practicing couldn't be any more obvious than on Passages, release by Origin in 2006. Through this rigorous study, Burns has sufficiently assim ...

Chicago Reader (Peter Margasak)
It’s hardly news that Chicago has a deep jazz community, and though a variety of specific scenes exist (free jazz, neo-trad, etc), players here tend to be distinguished by their versatility. But that often means that if a musician doesn’t wear a particular hat, he or she can get overlooked. Case in point: tenor saxophonist Scott Burns. One of t ...
