All About Jazz

With deep rhythmic and harmonic interplay, Trio East's trumpet/bass/drums grouping becomes so much more than it's parts as they explore a group aesthetic built over 5 years of working together. With five originals and tunes by Ellington and Coltrane, Clay Jenkins, Jeff Campbell and Rich Thompson have crafted a creative, uplifting and spontaneous recording.

All three members of Trio East are on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and travel extensively performing and conducting music workshops.

JazzWeek (Ed Trefzger)
A WORKING GROUP since 2001, the "power trio" of Clay Jenkins on trumpet, Jeff Campbell on bass and Rich Thompson on drums keeps a regular Thursday gig a few blocks from the Eastman School of Music where all are on the faculty. The absence of piano on this understated CD of mostly originals and a few uniquely arranged standards provides plenty of sp ...

Audiophile Audition (Jeff Krow)
The Trio East's new album, Best Bets, is a decidedly relaxed affair, and that is in no way a bad thing. Clay Jenkins is a smart, economical trumpet player with an exceptional, dynamic rhythm section behind him. Jeff Campbell on bass plays smoothly and dramatically, and works very well in conjunction with Rich Thompson on drums. Thompson is an amazi ...

Percussive Notes (Terry O'Mahoney)
New York-based Trio East includes Eastman School of Music faculty members Clay Jenkins (trumpet), Jeff Campbell (bass) and Rich Thompson (drums). This unconventional jazz trio configuration challenges the myth that one needs a chordal instrument to complete an ensemble. Their skillful and melodic soloing, intuitive interaction, and compositional pr ...

If not for Origin Records, questing ensembles, such as Trio East, would not be able to find label homes. Origin continues their fine tradition of focusing on less well known, to general jazz public audiences, musicians who want to work in free and more open musical environments. This is certainly the case here. Trio East is made up of three mu ...

All Music Guide (Scott Yanow)
Trumpet, bass and drum trios are not all that common. The trumpeter must have strong endurance and enough imagination to keep the set interesting, even when the bassist and drummer are operating as equals. Recording as Trio East on Best Bets, Clay Jenkins shows that he is very much up to the role, coming up with consistently creative ideas without ...
